WWF Cymru commissioned this temporary project to celebrate their 10th anniversary of being part of Earth Hour. Earth Hour is an international event, focusing the world’s attention on our planet and how we need to protect it. Hundreds of millions of people show their support by turning off their lights for one hour, on the same night, all across the world.

Lulu Quinn was commissioned to create a temporary installation outside the Senedd building in Cardiff Bay. Her concept was to create a huge message in a bottle sculpture made up of hundreds of re-cycled plastic bottles containing unique personal messages. These messages were gathered from participants in workshops leading up to the Earth Hour event. As well as workshops faciliatated by Lulu there were also workshops facilitated by Welsh poets Bethan Gwanas and Clare Potter and writer Lowri Cooke where issues around climate change and reducing emissions were discussed and personal messages, pledges or suggestions for change were written. Workshops took place at the Swansea Museum, the Glynn Vivian Museum and Art Gallery, Coleg Meirion Dwyfor in Dolgellau, Chepstow Museum, Monmouth Museum, Ysgol Gynradd Castellau in Beddau, Ysgol Gynradd Y Wern in Cardiff and Cardiff University WildSoc members.

The internally lit 8 metres long sculpture was installed outside the Senedd on the 24th of March and at 8.30pm on the 25th March, the lights were gradually switched off to mark Earth Hour. The event was streamed on Facebook and you can see the film here:
