Thompson Street ‘Cog or Flower’ Bollards

Thompson Street ‘Cog or Flower’ Bollards

description

The Thompson Street bollards in Barry are a unique blend of art and urban design, sculptural and witty, but also practical and useful. This project is the result of a fruitful collaboration between the Vale of Glamorgan's Landscape Architect and artist designer Walter Jack. As part of major and on-going refurbishment work in the area, Walter Jack was asked to design something for the street which would be fully integrated within the regeneration scheme and which would also span the length of the street.

Walter Jack wrote: "The inspiration for the designs came from the industrial, maritime/docks history and from the idea that Thompson Street itself has had a varied and multi-layered history. The (cast iron) material speaks of winches, dockside machinery and blacksmithing, while the forms have some of these same connotations but are also more playful and complex."

Each bollard is a unique sculpture within a family of four designs, which creates both continuity and variety as you travel along the street.
